Rolling Stone gave it 2 out of 5 stars, I on the other hand, will gladly give it a 3, maybe even a 3.5 (that would be pushing it). Smoke + Mirrors is definitely a side step from what the band was trying to accomplish in 2012, but overall it isn’t a complete flop. It has a really powerful drum ending, every instrument coming together, harmonizing. Unfortunately like a few songs on the album it can seem a bit repetitive at times, but its a great song to end the album. “The Fall” – The 6 minute song reminds me of their old sound. “Hopeless Opus” – Catchy sound, catchy chorus, great vocals, and a great guitar solo (guess where). The chorus may be bland, but it is catchy, and that’s what matters.ġ2. The foot-tapping beat draws you in and keeps your attention which makes up for the bland chorus. Yes, I know that’s a bit corny but it’s true. “Summer” – This song does, in fact, remind me of summer. I couldn’t really get into it that much.ġ1. “Trouble” – A fast paced, up-tempo song that’s really hard to follow. It has those motivational lyrics that empower you to go on.ġ0. “Dream” – Love the piano intro, love the vocals Reynolds brings and the premise of the song as a whole. Another song with a nice, and relaxing feel to it.ĩ. This is the music we would hear on Night Visions, reminding me of the subtle impact of the track “Rocks”. “It Comes Back to You” – Absolutely love the intro, the harmony between the guitars are just beautiful. It can seem a bit repetitive at times, and it feels like they are trying too hard to achieve that hard rock feel.Ĩ. “Friction” – I really liked the build, but I wasn’t a fan of the overall sound of the song itself. Reynolds hits some great notes while also staying in harmony with the great bass line, overall a feel good song. The xylophone that I think I hear in the background, I love. A much needed shift from the chorus of the song that will not be mentioned…be careful it might come back to haunt you. “Polaroid” – After recovering from the previously mentioned song, I skipped to the next track to find another very relaxing and calm one. Only upside to this song, the acoustic guitar towards the end, it’s pretty nice. Too repetitive, no idea what they were trying to accomplish. The verses before the chorus are perfectly fine, I have no problem with them, it’s the chorus. My first reaction was “what the hell are they doing?” it still is. Definitely one of my least favorite songs off of the album. Once again (I wasn’t lying) an awesome guitar solo is thrown in at the end, and this time it actually works out.ĥ. That and the great piano piece that brings the song down a few notches only to bring it back up with a wonderful build that allows that explosive rock sound to come out again. The first thing I thought of when I was listening to this song was the fact that it had a more blues rock feel to it. The instruments all come together to create a great, loud, and erupting sound. “I’m So Sorry” – The song starts off with a great intro that shows off some great guitar riffs that lead to a fantastic build to some powerful vocals. There was a weird (and random) drum interruption at times that seemed completely unnecessary, but the guitar solo near the end (a trend heard throughout the album) makes up for that mistake.Ĥ. It has a eerie, haunting sound to it at times, but that just adds to the overall feel of the song itself. The electronic-like sound finally pays off in this one, instantly putting you into a trance, a good one. “Smoke and Mirrors” – This one I approve of, the band releases a song with a chill, relaxing vibe that makes you sit there and really just absorb the moment you’re in. There isn’t much singing so to speak, nothing that really grabs my attention.ģ. The best way I can describe it is mediocre and out of place. “Gold” – Was not a fan of this one either, it was mostly the beat in the background that threw me way off. The chorus can be catchy, I guess, but it really strays from what they were trying to accomplish on their first album.Ģ. If you were watching the Grammys, the band performed a live version of “Shots” for an album promo for Target’s release of the album with 4 extra tracks, that performance, I liked. The electronic sound and vocal ranges of lead singer Dan Reynolds just don’t mix. I felt like the band was trying way too hard to incorporate something that they weren’t the best at. “Shots” – When I first heard this song as a single, I wasn’t too fond of the sound.
#IMAGINE DRAGONS ALBUM SMOKE AND MIRRORS HOW TO#
With EDM-like beats to random pulses of the electric guitar, I didn’t know how to feel about the record as a whole. The band that brought you the explosive track “Radioactive” is back with a new sound and a new style that strays from their previous album Night Visions.
